Yesterday, I discovered a cluster of lovely shops in the 5200 block of North Avenue in my new Washington Heights neighborhood.  As I walked into the Milwaukee Design Collective shop, the heady smell of balsam and cypress put me in an instant winter and Christmas mood.  It was coming from a VoluSpa candle which I noticed was in large pretty tin.  I looked around to see there were candles of many scents in many beautifully decorated tins.  Of course, all I could see were the many earrings and necklaces I could make from them.  It was hard to resist buying one of each but I managed to walk out with only this two-toned red tin and a small jar version of the balsam scented one.  I’m turning the lid into jewelry this afternoon.  The added bonus is my studio will smell of goji and tarocco orange while I’m sawing, filing and sanding.

This made me laugh - love it, absolutely love it!

Optimism, such a win win situation.

I’m in!  I’m in!  Yesterday, I received an email from Faythe Levine, founder of ART vs. CRAFT, inviting me to sell my jewelry at this year’s show.  I’m very excited to try it out as I’ve heard so many good things about it.  If you’re anywhere within an easy drive of Milwaukee, WI over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend put it on your calendar and stop by.  The show is Saturday, November 26th and you can click the link for more details and full vendor list.

We scored a gray Smith Corona typewriter just like this one for my 9 year old daughter, Bella.  She loves it!

Dear Alabama,

Webster’s Dictionary definition of fascism:
fascism
(fash’ iz em) n.  a government characterized by … belligerent nationalism and racism … etc.

My definition of fascist:
fascist (fash’ ist) n., adj.  anyone who wrote, promoted and/or voted to pass Alabama’s immigration law.

Sincerely,
Rachael

Check out this NY Times’ piece on Zefrey Throwell’s ‘Ocularpation: Wall Street’ that was performed this morning is just fantastic.  I also love that he runs a gallery in a 6’ high x 2’ wide x 2’ feet deep space formerly occupied by a water fountain in the basement of a building.

This is a clip of Representative Louise Slaughter using basic dollars and sense to call out those who seek to eliminate funding of the National Endowment for the Arts.  Did you know the 167.5 million invested in the NEA in fiscal year 2010 generated 166.2 billion in economic activity, supported 5.7 million jobs and earned the U.S. Treasury 12.6 million in tax revenue?  There is no logical reason for cutting NEA funding.  As Rep. Slaughter said, I wish we could find more programs that turned such a profit for our country.
